What is it about religion and/or its followers that causes some people to turn violent?

Well today my dad decided to cut me several times because he thought he was being righteous about his religion, He said to me that jesus is the only true god and anyone that believes differently is a fool also he cared to mention that my religion was **** but he knows nothing about it tho
