Shooting in busy street in the U.S.?

A few years ago, maybe around 2005, I remember hearing on the news about a man dressed in black wearing a balaclava ski mask, opened fire in a busy street with an automatic submachine gun. It was in a fairly large U.S. city but I cant remember which one. A witness, ran to his truck and grabbed his hand gun when he saw the man shooting innocent people, and fired upon him, however failed to penetrate the perpetrators body armor, and was shot dead by the gunman. I cant remember the name of this shooting or where it took place. Does anyone know what Im talking about? I was younger when I saw it on the news and I cant remember much about it and I want to use it as an example in an argument for school about firearms. So if any one knows please let me know where it happened and what the incident was called and who was involved. Thanks!
