Why would Catholics want a man canonized,who allowed his Church to cover-up sexual abuse for decades?

Well they made Ratzinger pope and he helped cover it up too. I have no idea how they can even begin to try to justify this to the none catholic world, but then again, perhaps they don't feel they ought to.
